RonH- You are correct, that is what Dean meant for the glass plate- it is not a resonator by any means.
Maybe on another planet......

I say buy it, Eq! Hey! "HOL-FLAUNIRegular price: US$43.99Sale price: US$7.90", you not only get the device you need, you get to tell us how it works! It may just have a microphone/amp/rectifier driving the lamp, with power borrowed from the cradled phone.

I hear $70K/yr allows a family of one to survive there. Wonder what this job pays.

Right, Dean! The pencil lead mass-loaded the crystal, dropped it's natural resonance, and broadening its Q. Grinding down was preferred!
Again, a little too much force while grinding, and....snap! Two crystals that won't oscillate!
I'm (was) WA2RBA. Maybe we chatted before!

Don't know about the Tennesee DMV, but you'd be stopped by a lawman in New York state for badly aligned lights. We have state-approved inspection stations, and they check headlight alignment! Check with a local bike shop.

Re: Circuit board etching
Stay safe with ferric chloride- off the shelf at Radio Shack. Use aluminum foil on a table, then etch in a shallow pan that's inside an empty old pan, or cookie sheet to catch any splashes. Glass or plastic containers will work, and use plastic tongs for handling the board. Use gloves and eye protec...

A good hobby store carries acrylic casting materials for casting your own clear "coin" if that's what you're after. Make one, or one hundred at a time with an inexpensive mold.<p>John

"Getting a patent" and "not a lot of money" don't go in the same sentence. Your best bet is to first consult a patent lawyer and get an idea of the leaguethey play in. Next, bear in mind that having a patent (in 2-4 years) protects you only if you can again pay a lawyer to defend...

Waaay too many, Dean! Same with the "torch-shift" method of changing values! That one "stinks" too! :) Lots of "Unodes" as you call them. Those, we'd sell to the freshmen saying they'd be ahead of the class if they brought theirs in instead of having to make them! "...

Alright Dean, you've dated me! (as in carbon!)
Filing up carbon comp resistors goes back to the early days, and yes, it does have its pitfalls, drift and temperature instability to name two!
But, in a pinch.......

Re: odd ball parts....
If the circuit truly requires 402 ohms, you select a 390 (standard value) carbon, break out your trusty small file, and start swipeing away! You'll first carve out the body, then when you start cutting into the resistor element, monitor the resistance until you hit 402 ohms. Cover the wound with glu...

Well, it proves what I believed all along, solar cells are AC generators! Just a rather low frequency is all!

Re: Wireless communication underwater
Your 10 mw, 433 MHz system is pretty much useless in water. Research ultrasound, or better yet, very low frequency communication.

How are you measuring this "dark current", and what kind of solar cell is it?
