Re: P.C.Board design

Your office folks won't like it, but an old fashioned guillotine-type paper cutter works on boards- just make sure it doesn't move while shearing it, and, ah, miss your fingers! Sharp blade required! And of course, avoid the fiberglas dust.

Re: Temperature controlled home brew

Best I'd suggest Mike, is to find an electrician (a beer-drinking one would be best!) and describe what you're after- let him do it all. 240 volts is deadly, especially around liquids. You'll need GFI, a cutoff switchbox, and proper wiring. He'll set up a controller for temperature. I don't know you...

Re: SELF-POWERED VOLTMETER

There are self-powered DC voltmeters available. Just add a bridge rectifier and a filter capacitor to your AC so the meter sees DC. Calibration will be necessary.

Re: Remote Control Lawnmower

Question: Have you approached the goal of RC grass cutting by chopping grass from 4" to 2" as the end objective? You'll find the gas motor, although cheap and powerful, is an altogether waste of energy while contributing to the awful acoustic, safety, and environmental damage they do. My p...

Re: RF meter question

Hook up a dipole and get an idea of what direction it's coming from? 50 KW radio station nearby, or an X-Ray lab? Perhaps the guy next-door has a beefy wireless LAN running? CB or ham enthusiast nearby? Many possibilities! Always will be some background, but if it's constant, just measure relative t...

Re: A Thought Experiment - Thermoelectrics and Cars

Keep on thinking, WildBoar! :) Entropy being what it is, the 10, 20, or 50 amps you draw from the alternator to power the Peltiers has to come from somewhere, right? That at a glance would require more engine output, which would create more heat, which would....you see. If you want to do some more t...

I'm curious, what is going to power the alternator? And what is 8 HP?

Indeed it does, Cato! Makes me want to go out and get my FCC ticket (again!)
And yup, they've been repeating off satellites for years, using handhelds.
Thanks for the site!

As a non-solid state alternative, there are thermal time-delay relays for any voltage and contact style you can imagine.

Re: Flexible Thermoelectric Coolers Anyone?

Peltier junctions are not made of silicon- They're doped bismuth telluride. Also, I don't know which silver epoxy you've tested, but it is available and used for power MOSFETS, IGBTS, etc. And if it's high current flexible circuits that you want, let me know. Like I said, if you find a source for Pe...

Re: Flexible Thermoelectric Coolers Anyone?

Had the same thought myself (back in the 80's) for chilling a can of pop or whatever beverage from a wrap-around Peltier, plugged into the cig lighter. I couldn't get the two major makers of the chips to sell me the un-mounted chips. The flexible substrate is no problem- lots of folks make flexible ...
