DC motors can be ok if you have a gear box and high gear ratio... all depends on your use. I have torn down huge plotter printers and they had DC motors and encoders, and high geared. and the encoder tape. I couldn't even see the lines on it unless i used magnifying lens.. big gear ratios are easier...

why not use a buck / boost converter ? Or get an adjustable driver..
what voltages and current are you working with?
What use of the leds ? constant load or intermittent ?
the more info the better..

Dyarker >> what about the columns? is that going to be an issue as well ? gonna be really hard to make All that fit.. I don't think it's gonna be feasible to do.. I gotta do more thinking..Gotta see if there's something easier. too bad I can't just short out 1 led per segment.. then it would run off...

well, the thing is... Unknowingly I bought the backpack boards before i bought the led displays. I was hoping to resolve the issue by possibly with an adapter board, but that won't be possible. I have some other boards that drove larger 7 seg led ( TPIC6B596 ) It's easy to use too, but i haven't had...

Update to the Blue displays.. come to find out these displays need more power than the HT16K33 can supply, China Lied to me again..I told them i needed a low voltage Blue led display. the lady said the leds only need 3.2V to operate, But failed to tell me that the display had 2 leds in series per se...

At the bottom of this page and all other post, To the right of the REPLY button is a down arrow with some lines.
click that and it gives you the options on how to view the page.. newest to oldest or oldest to newest.. easy.
