Looks interesting, what does a verve2 kit cost?

Re: help with a custom dimmer
He means using the 2N3055 as a pass xistor to handle the additional current needed. Another option is to use a resistor between the 12 volt supply and the input of the regulator to carry some of the power. A 2 ohm resistor at 2.5 amps will drop 5 volts leaving only 2 volts across the regulator at 5 ...

Re: help with a custom dimmer
The LM317T is rated at 1.5 amps. How much current do you need to drive the display?

Re: Garage Remote intermittently working........
Most of those older remotes have an adjustable trimmer cap to center the frequency. If your's does try turning it about 1/16" either left or right to find the center which will give the best range. Other than that check the antenna connection.

Re: help with a custom dimmer
Here's one of those 555 circuits modified using a CDS. This circuit is continuously adjusting the brightness of the LED depending on the ambient light level. The pots will allow you to set the initial brightness. I have not tried this circuit but looks plausible.

A simple thermo switch like the one in this photo might work. Check out Amazon.com they have a bunch listed with all kinds of temperature ranges.

Re: BLDC experiment
Usually you need three sensors mounted 120 degrees apart. They detect rotation and are used for speed control. The question is is the angular location critical or is the hall sensor just used to verify the speed and prove rotation.

Re: MOSFET
First, using PWM is not more efficient than using a linear control or even a series resistor. MrAL the more "efficient" I was referring to was the fact that the mosfet will consume less power in the form of heat when driven using PWM in a lamp dimming application, as was the original requ...

Re: MOSFET
I'm confused :???: Playing around with driving a power MOSFET to dim a lamp running off a 12 volt battery. You said lamp now you say it's not a lamp Can't use the PWM method, as the load is not a lamp and won't tolerate pulses. Now you said, The idea here is to sweep a resistive load across the pane...

Re: MOSFET
Pulse Width Modulation is the best way to use a mosfet as a dimmer. Runs more efficiently, use a 555 or micro to drive.

Well glad to see you got it working and your welcome. After that last post in early January I experimented with a MSGEQ7 graphic display chip controlled by a Picaxe 20M2. It has the variable brightness with the beat of the music you are looking for but not the best band selectivity. Best part though...

If you place your face about 18 inches from the screen, grit your teeth and squint real hard it's readable. But seriously it's not that bad. I was able to read 95% of it.
