Re: Western Electric Vacuum Tubes

At last, a reply from Western Electric: Thank you for your message. First, we believe you mean the plate/anode, not grid. Mesh plate tubes like the 310A & 348A are designed primarily for audio frequency amplifier applications where exceptionally low noise is required. All internal elements were ...

Re: Western Electric Vacuum Tubes

2 replies from Uncle Doug: "Thanks :) Glad to hear it, TV. Since we only deal with vintage tube guitar (and some PA) amps, the exotic, horrendously-expensive HiFi boutique tubes are way out of our realm. I looked up the SP and LP terms and could find no explanation. Sorry." "Since we ...

Re: Western Electric Vacuum Tubes

That would be the difference between the actual tube rather than the holes. If I read his comments correctly, given the same construction of the same tube, there'd be no real discernible difference if it used either the large or small punch holes.

Re: Western Electric Vacuum Tubes

Reply from Mark at BlueGlow Electronics: small punch is pretty close to wire mesh, they are the earlier made of these and some say they sound better. I think the large hole tubes are just as good sound wise. There is no electrical difference, just difference in how the holes were punched into the me...

Re: Western Electric Vacuum Tubes

Another theory from YouAllKnowBob on YouTube: " They appear to be high power tubes so I would assume the holes in the plates are to help keep the heat even and not build up inside. I would bet that the large punch were the orignals which required the plates to be made special and the small punc...

Re: Western Electric Vacuum Tubes

Hmmm......... I wonder if it is just some term that some of the younger Vacuum Tube enthusiasts use, because they thought it was more appropriate? My sister and her husband were in to Tube Audio Equipment, back in the 90's. A lot were newer designs that were Pre-Amp, and even Main Amplifiers. I'll ...

Re: Western Electric Vacuum Tubes

So, I've been trying to find out what the deal is on these punched tubes. Just like the info on the web, there's not much to be found. Terry at DLab was the first and he didn't know, but speculated about the cap. Brad the Guitologist had never heard of them. Mark at Blueglow Electronics has not resp...

Re: Western Electric Vacuum Tubes

Wish I knew. Would like to hear from a few of the others who used to frequent the boards, just to let us know they are still kicking around after the past couple of years.

Re: How To Print Out Schematics

Used to be you could select banner, but it looks like most printer dialogs have removed that option. Even though I have B&W and Color, 36" wide by however long the roll is available at work, I'm still old school and like to open it up in paint, cut out 8"x10.5" rectangles and stit...

Re: Western Electric Vacuum Tubes

Did a quick search and found a link ( https://tubeworldexpress.com/collections/western-electric/small-punch ) to which there are both small and large punch on the same page. If you look at them side by side, the holes in the screen are just that - large or small as compared to the other. Not much el...

Re: Is Nuts and Volts dead ?

I just received my latest copy a week or so ago. The sticker on it is dated 6/7/23. 2022 ISSUE-3. I feel the same way as solar3000. Just hoping N&V can keep on plugging away. Well, that's encouraging. With the recent email activity I've been getting from them, let's hope things are on the upswi...

Re: Antenna for Cell Phone!

Due to sneaky spam, original good /feasible question reposted below. OP: Does anyone know of a reasonable method of improving cell phone coverage? Coverage is weak near my house and the phone will not work at all inside. Do the internal antennas that are sold on TV for $20 work or are they all hype?...
