Re: Revitalizing electrolytic caps
There are 2 ways to do this:
1) Get a Variac. Remove tubes, if any. Start at about 85 VAC. Turn the PS on, let it run for half an hour. increase the voltage to 90, turning it up at half hour intervals until you reach powerline voltage, or a little highewr if you are brave.
2) The no-variac metho...

Re: Lead acid battery
We have about 300 UPSs where I work. They all use sealed garden tractor batteries.
The reason for sealed batteries: They don't give off hydrogen gas when they are charging.
Unsealed batteries work OK in a car, all kinds of places for the hydrogen to go.
Not so fine in a house or office, the hy...

Re: Tips for removing residual solder?
RonH is right. The solder flows into gaps between molecules in the wires that are soldered. it fills in spaces in the contacts. You would have to melt these parts and centrifuge the material to separate the solder from the gold.

Re: Does a choke look like a resistor?
Some chokes look like a big resistor. Frequently the end will be stepped, that's a hint. But not always. Check at Newark, All Electronics, Jameco and the many other sites that advertise in N&V. Sometimes you have to be a detective to be a tech.

The arrow points toward the negative side. If the "tail" of the arrow is positive and the target the arrow whacks is negative, current flows.
Current flows from negative to positive, so the direction of current flow is the opposite of the direction of the arrow.

One thing you will eventually learn about learning electronics: it's like making stew.
If you were to chew on the raw ingredients that go into making stew, you would have a nasty experience. Throw them all in a pot, apply heat over time, they blend and mingle and turn into something fine.
Someti...

Not what would normally be considered a robot, but it is robotic. A pan-tilt unit for a surveillance camera. If an alarm sensor is tripped, camera pans to the region monitored by the sensor. Uses standard burglar alarm sensors, an OOPic-R and 2 servos.
