WHOA... that is truly disturbing. Talk about "big brother". The government should not be allowed to intervene in your daily life like that.

Hi Jollyrgr,

Thanks for the suggestion. I may end up going this route because I couldn't get my solution to work.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Dale, I would get a mini USB hub that is powered by wall wart or battery. Thanks for the suggestion... I have thought about getting a self-powered USB hub, but I'm short on money right now, and I'm also interested in the electronics of the application. It's much more satisfying to "do it you...

Self-powered USB "pass-through"?

Hi All! I have a laptop on which I damaged the USB port, about 1 1/2 years ago when I was learning about the PIC 18F4550 and USB devices. In short, the USB ports no longer supply power, but they work with self-powered USB devices. The laptop is now my wife's, and I wanted to make a device for her th...

Ahh, it took me a moment to get what you were saying. To clarify, I just added a single "status indicator" LED to show whether the clock was running on battery or outlet power. I had planned to just lower the duty cycle on the clock display when running on battery, however, your suggestion...

I just did a search at one of Fox's distributors. Do any of these parts help you? You can easily make a DIP package that fits your needs by etching your own smaller PCB at home to fit the oscillator, then adding pin headers to it. You might even be able to use Robert's idea by using a D-Flip Flop li...

Try looking at Fox Electronics. I have gotten a sample order from them before for a specific frequency oscillator.

Samples are slow but they do send them eventually. If time is an issue, I would suggest you check some of their distributors.

Thanks Colin and Steve G!

Steve G, I used your circuit because I had all of the parts lying around... and it works like a charm! I currently have an LED being turned on by the 4550 when the clock is plugged in, and off when the battery is running. Thanks very much for your help!

Regards,
Steve R

Circuit Question

Hi all! I'm new to this forum (and to electronics), so I apologize if this question has been asked before. I'm not sure what you would call this type of circuit, so I wasn't sure what to search for. I've built a very simple alarm clock using a PIC18F4550, with a 4-digit LED display using multiplexin...
