Re: fading away
I'd still like to check it out some more, but I'm leaning toward the idea that it's worn sleve bearings in the motor. I've noticed such squealing happen in other things in the past, especially in fans. The fan in an old dehumidifier I was using had that problem intermittently, but eventually it beca...

Re: fading away
Some garage drive units you can easily replace. most come with a new rail and chain or if it's a screw drive.. I've replaced a handful of them,, usually the plastic gear inside fails..typical.. if they had a metal gear, they'd last forever i bet. make sure everything is greased well,, even inside t...

Re: fading away
Well, to further the activity, I'm at a loss as to what "seems to make sense more than it being the worm gear drive". Perhaps it got deleted accidentally while typing. I know my "new" phone does weird over-typing and bizarre auto(in)correct, so come on back with that info. Maybe...

Re: fading away
I can produce a bit more activity and have motivation to check in today here if I ask about my present problem. The garage door opener seems to be squealing. Anyway, that seems to make sense more than it being the worm gear drive. Any thoughts on if I can replace the genie drive unit cheaply as DIY?...

Re: slippery screen
Ok, after that suggestion I found a setting called touch and hold and am trying that out by setting it to the shortest time, 0.5s.

slippery screen
My friend had a spare cell phone and gave it to me. My old cell phone was easier to use because this new one has a screen that's slippery. Holding the finger still on a spot to select something is almost impossible because the finger slips off the selected spot. Presently, I'm thinking of the possib...

I check in every now and then, but I think I'll stop by more if I can remember. Then hopefully a link to here will automatically take its place on my browsers' home pages displays of icons representing my most-used links. That would remind me to stop by more often.

[sold] Retiring and Passing on the Mantle
I'm retiring from analog electronics and wish to pass on my workshop/home to an electronics enthusiast at a low price. The shop features many through-hole power MOSFETs and CD40106 through-hole IC chips. Much more than that included. The saying that all I need to invent is imagination and a pile of ...

Re: Voltage spike
You're welcome. If what you try doesn't work, the problem seems pretty possible to solve one way or another.

Re: Voltage spike
That seems more like a problem I worked on afterall. I had a big transformer that I was doing PWM of the 115VAC 60hz to the primary winding. When primary power was turned off a big spike would happen. i solved it by shorting across the primary when the power was disconnected. A difference I see is h...

Re: Voltage spike
If I get the idea of your circuit, a possibility could be to build a snubber circuit that gets switched across the transformer output when the circuit being powered is switched off. It could involve a big capacitor to store the energy that gradually gets dissipated by a resistor.

Re: The honorable relay vs technology
I control the compressor of my window A/C externally to get better results than stock performance. But I have to attend to it or the evaporator will ice up. Once I fell asleep and the ice on the evaporator got thick and stopped the fan. It was straining and overheating when I woke up.
