Re: Ceiling Fan wiring
Dac My point exactly. I do not want a light dimmer control-only capacitive type with the proper values. Will checkout HD and see. Even if values were wrong, it's easy to clip out caps in the fan (since it will always be on high speed set with pull chain) and wire them in to the new wall mount assemb...

Re: Ceiling Fan wiring
Bob Looks like a garden variety NEMA standard plug to me (for 3 wire cords).Don't know where the "U" fits in other than a vague outline of contact array. MrAl Have just completed a lot of internet research and also the opportunity to tear down three more fans (ranging from 3-15 years age) ...

Re: Ceiling Fan wiring
MrAl As posted I found the caps by opening the fan junction box, a simple procedure. I have seen some ceiling fan internals in the past and they all used caps for speed control. I bet if you took a closer look at yours, you would find out that your "one cap" is actually a dual cap and sing...

Ceiling Fan wiring
I got a used ceiling fan and I want to add a wall switch speed control, rather than the usual fan mounted pull chain. I did a quick and lazy reverse engineering on the fan by opening up its junction box. It looks like the speed is controlled by a capacitor in series with it's armature : Hi-0 mf, Mid...

Chuckle- Chuckle Lemp- If CS means Chris Smith, if nothing else I will say he kept the discussions very lively with his cockamamie posts and replies. People were coming out of nowhere to voice their opinions and I think their may have been record replys to many of them. I have to go with Dacflyer ab...

Re: Scope question...
All of what Dean posted is sadly true, and we have not even got into ground lead inductance effects yet. For more in depth reading on the subject of probes, you may want to check out my N&V Nov. 2010 article titled "Oscilloscope Probes and Probing"

Re: Scope question...
It may be that the reduction in bandwidth of the 1X position rather than 10X is the cause of this. This is normal in even the best of probes.

Re: Shocking News Report
Interesting article Lemp. But even though these were extraordinary circumstances that led up to the electrocution of that boy, it is still a classical case of power line shock. I.E.- A free hanging hot wire in contact with one portion of the human body while the other part is firmly electrically gro...

Shocking News Report
When passing by the kitchen TV, I heard the news reporter mention Cherokee Lake. This caused me to stop and take notice Since we vacation there every year. The story goes like this: Two young boys were swimming between two moored house boats at fifty? feet apart. Some thing caused them to be electro...

Re: Odd value voltage regulator...
No I don't, but I have made custom reg. voltages by inserting a small value resistor between the "ground" pin and actual ground. Might work for your 3.3 device. Can only be done empirically as each reg. will require a different value even in the same series. Start with 100 ohms and go from...

Re: Magnet in conductive media...
Which begs the question:
Can you actually have current without an electric field to cause it?
Can you actually have voltage without the current flow to produce it?
What came first - the chicken or the egg?

Re: Magnet in conductive media...
I do recall several years ago reading about the USN having developed a vessel speed indicator using an underwater magnetic device. Sketchy on details but had no moving parts. Maybe it relates to your question.

Re: AC Plugs!
AFCI is only required in bedrooms . The current code now requires arc fault breakers almost every where gfi is not required. Having just completed wiring of my new home and passing final inspection, I am painfully aware this recent change in code. Three prong plugs without a ground wire? That doesn...
