Problems may not arise if socket is kept cool. But drawing 100 watts of power through that dimmer switch is a concern. How warm does the dimmer feal if left on for 20 minutes?

There are only a few ways to get motion from a robot. 1)Pneumatic- Not enough Stamina, Could be fast though. 2)Hydraulic- To Slow, Could be very powerfull. 3)Gas Motor- Not reliable, but could be fast and powerfull. 4)AC Motor- Most AC motors have very little torque. Do you know what type of brushes are on the commutator? Is it carbon or metal contacts like copper? High powered motor like you have I'm going to assume they are copper contacts. If this is true it will not hurt running in fowards or backwards motions. Best thing to do is to look at the wear pattern...
